Superior Essex Communications Ignites Customer Experience with Website Revamp 

The Office of US Congressman August Pfluger (11th District of Texas) recently paid a visit to the Superior Essex Communications plant in Brownwood, Texas. As a member of the Energy & Commerce committee, Congressman Pfluger is well-versed in the intricacies of BEAD funding and BABA, making him an ideal advocate for the industry. He was joined by Dr. Cory Hines, President of Howard Payne University, and Dr. Dale Meinecke, the VP of Development for the school.

The Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program, provides $42.45 billion to expand high-speed internet access by funding planning, infrastructure deployment and adoption programs in the United States. While the Build America, Buy America Act (BABA) focuses on maximizing the federal government’s use of services, goods, products, and materials produced and offered in the United States.

During the visit, the Superior Essex Communications team engaged in fruitful discussions with Congressman Pfluger.

“We had great conversations about the infrastructure systems in America as well as using Texas made product for Texas!” Jeffrey Buck, the Director of Operations at the plant, said.

The team also extended an invitation to Congressman Pfluger to attend the official grand re-opening and celebration of the plant in May. The Congressman expressed interest in attending, though his availability will ultimately depend on his schedule.

Superior Essex Communications, a leading provider of communications cable and accessory products, is excited about the potential collaboration and the opportunities it may bring for the local industry.

, a leading manufacturer and supplier of communications cable, announced it is continuing to invest in manufacturing capacity and equipment at its Brownwood, Texas, plant to help meet global demand for OSP fiber optic cables, drop fiber and hybrid cables.

As the fiber and hybrid markets continue to experience strong growth, the overall $73 million plant expansion investments will create 170 new U.S. manufacturing jobs and support broadband buildouts nationwide to bring high-speed internet and 5G service to all Americans. The expanded facility’s increased capacity and other improvements will continue Superior Essex Communications’ market leadership in fiber, drop and hybrid cables.

The investment will improve manufacturing equipment and build an additional 90,000 square feet adjacent to the current Brownwood plant, expanding the facility to more than 500,000 total square feet of production. It will support new jobs as well as convert some existing jobs from legacy OSP copper cable manufacturing to focus on optical fiber cables.

The expansion also will incorporate green building practices – such as Power over Ethernet (PoE) lighting and the use of repurposed equipment – and explore the use of solar and battery power sources for the plant.

When leading sustainable building projects, we tend to focus on the building materials far too often. In doing this, we overlook how the physical design of the building locks us out of choosing sustainable materials. This is especially true for cables jacketed with polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

PVC is the most commonly used plastic material in buildings, and can have negative environmental and health impacts if not managed properly. Like most chlorinated vinyl materials, PVC is a known human carcinogen and shows up five times on the 

One way to reduce the amount of PVC installed in buildings is to reduce the plenum spaces in a building. “Plenum” is a fire rating for spaces where air circulates openly, usually for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. These spaces are typically above suspended ceilings or below raised floors. Because fire and smoke can spread quickly in these spaces, building codes require Plenum cable jackets to be made of flame-retardant materials—namely, PVC.

“PVC and similar plastic materials negatively impact the environment throughout their lifespan,” said Annie Bevan, Global Head of Sustainability of Superior Essex Communications. “Because plenum cables are commonly jacketed with these materials, they can expose humans and the environment to harmful chemicals not just during their use in the buildings, but long after the building is out of use.”

By designing raised floors or dropped ceilings, we cut our options for sustainable materials. So how can we reduce their presence in the built environment? Bevan believes it takes a bit of innovative building design.

“One way that builders can reduce plenum space and decrease the need for those harmful cabling materials is to design fewer plenum spaces in the building,” explains Bevan. “Plenum fire codes do not apply to open-ceiling designs, making it easier for project teams to implement PVC-free solutions.”

Reducing plenum spaces opens up a number of PVC alternatives for in-building cabling. Superior Essex Communications has worked closely with certification organizations and suppliers to provide non-PVC cabling solutions. Weintraub was one of three new directors elected to the board at the organization’s annual meeting. The newly installed board appointed him secretary at their first meeting. He plans to leverage his extensive experience in international sales to boost the organization’s reach in the Middle East and Latin America regions.

The employees of Superior Essex, Essex Brownell, and Essex Furukawa Magnet Wire have again come together in support of the neighborhood surrounding its Fort Wayne facilities.

The group dedicated a new, youth-focused, library last week. It was placed outside the plant; next to the 

—which celebrated its 5,000th food item, and 300th piece of clothing donated into the community. The library will be a family-forward outlet and is designed to be a natural extension of the pantry. It is currently stocked with crayons, toys, coloring books, young-reader books, magazines, and plenty of other materials donated.

Greg Bosk is on the advisory board of the project and is the Energy Technology Engineer for Essex Furukawa. He said that the team has embraced the Mother Theresa message on the pantry to ‘help one person at a time and always start with the person nearest you.’

“There are some great people here; it is our belief that we owe the community we are in an opportunity to get back on its feet,” he said. “This is just a small step and once we learn how to do this, we can move on to bigger and greater things.”

The library was built by Doug Anderson, a Senior Quality Engineer for 

 using recycled material from the facility. It was painted by Isabella DiRico, a local Girl Scout attending Snider High School and daughter of April Nowlin—a Customer Support Specialist for
